“When preparing to travel, lay out all your clothes and all your money. Then take half the clothes and twice the money.” – Susan Heller
Atins is blessed with two main seasons, winter and summer. In winter, temperatures occasionally drop to lows of 24°C with a high possibility of heavy thunderstorms in the aftermath. The rainy season usually starts by mid-January and extends until June, whereby April and May generally see the heaviest rainfalls during the year. It is during these months that the lagoons between the dunes of the Lençóis Maranhenses fill up. The lower areas of Atins including certain tracks to the village and also within its boundaries can get washed out, large puddles form and block passage ways. This is when Atins turns into a real island, only accessible from the water.
When summer arrives by June / July, cross onshore winds of 15 to 30 knots sweep the region. You can expect highs of 35°C and lows of 30°C from June to the end of January. The best time to visit the National Park, the dunes and lagoons of the Lençóis Maranhenses is between June and September. If you’re headed to Atins for kiting, you will encounter feasible winds from July to January, however, the strongest winds prevail from October to mid-December. That’s when the action is rolling real strong!
