Brazil’s national treasure

Lençóis Maranhenses National Park

The Bedsheets of Maranhão

Located in the Northeast of Brazil, covering over 90km of coastline, the Lençóis Maranhenses is the biggest sand formation of its kind in South America.

Radiating white dunes hugging crystal blue and green lagoons that stretch out like crisp, endless ‘bedsheets’ before you, the Lençóis are a treasure trove to explore when you’re staying with us at Convento Arcádia. This protected national park preserves over 155,000 hectares, consisting of mobile dunes and lagoons.

About The Lençóis

Set just south of the Amazon Basin and accumulating up to 2000 millimeters of rainfall a year between the months of January to June the Lençóis Maranhenses are not your typical desert. The rainwater is quickly absorbed into the sand, which raises the water table above ground and in turn, fills up the temporary ponds between the dune chains. This results in the magical, blue, black, green lagoons dotted in a sea of dunes. The strong trade winds play a major role too, as it not just attracts kitesurfers, but also carries sand from the many rivers along the Northeast of Brazil which eventually gets deposited here, to create beautiful half-moon-shaped dunes – some of which are over 20m in height!

Although it’s one of Brazil’s natural wonders, amidst the famed Amazon, the Pantanal and the Iguaçú Falls, the extraordinary Lençóis Maranhenses National Park lies off-the-beaten-path and attracts less visitors in comparison - even more reason to add it to your list! When the sunlight reflects in the lagoons and on the white sand dunes it creates that magical atmosphere, a surreal energy, that will make you stop in your tracks and gaze at its sheer, wild beauty in awe.
