Giddy up! It’s time to ride like the wind
Don your horse riding boots or equally comfortable footwear and get ready for a horseback riding adventure in the Lençóis Maranhenses! We partnered up with the horse whisperers at Sempre Atins to offer you a wide range of options exploring the dunes of the national park in total harmony with nature. Facundo and his team of local guides have been riding the Lençóis since 2014 and know all the best trails for each season. They offer a wide range of options, morning or afternoon adventures, full day trips to the lagoons or expeditions across the entire park from two up to eight days.
You’ll start early in the morning on your trail to Ponta do Mangue, a traditional community inside the park, to greet the sunrise over the white dunes of the Lençóis. A typical and hearty breakfast awaits you at Dona Ziluca. On the return you’ll ride along the beach or take a different route depending on the tides. Back at the hotel for 9:00 AM you may dig in for a second breakfast!
You’ll stop at Canto do Atins for a lovely shrimp lunch or at Ponta do Mangue for their hearty free-range chicken meal. You’ll ride back to the hotel after lunch around 1:00 PM.
If you prefer sleeping in during your holidays, don’t miss the sunset parcours. This tour will take you to the first dunes of the Lençóis Maranhenses so you can take in the sunset from one of the highest dunes. You can ride into the sunset, but eventually you’ll want to turn 180˚ to find your way back to the hotel at 6:30 PM.
For horse lovers we recommend a full day of immersion. Right after breakfast Sempre Atins will pick you up at the hotel to embark on your adventures of the day. As you commence the trail towards Ponta do Mangue you might observe the flora and fauna in the areas surrounding the dunes of the Lençóis coming to life. The mesmerizing views from the first dunes will energise you for the rest of the trail. After exploring the first couple of dunes in the park your lunch stop will take you to Dona Ziluca who serves up a delicious Galinha Caipira (free-range chicken) prepared in a mildly spicy coconut stew. After a midday siesta in the hammocks the trip continues to the Lagoon of the Seven Women (Lagoa das Sete Mulheres) where you can take a plunge into the crystal-clear water. On your return to Atins you will explore the field of lagoons close to Canto de Atins, from where your trail leads you back along the beaches. Along the way you’ll have a chance to observe the fishermen hauling in today’s catch, as well as the local birdlife and shellfish that typify the wealth of the flora and fauna of the region. We’ll welcome you back to the Convento Arcádia for 4:30 PM.
