The Route of Emotions
Explore the states of Maranhão, Piauí and Ceará
The Route of Emotions

The ’Route of Emotions’ navigates through three National Parks and is simply, one of the most mesmerizing tours you can experience when in Brazil.

Enjoy the most stunning beaches around the village of Jericoacoara, explore the natural wonders of the Delta of the Parnaíba river and discover the beauty of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park.

There’s something for everyone. For decades the shores of Ceará with its strong wind conditions have attracted windsurfers and kiteboarders from around the world. The lesser known Parnaíba Delta beckons you to sail among its islands and enjoy the tranquil settings of local fishing villages, which offer the most delicious seafood and warm hospitality. The icing on the cake, the Lençóis Maranhenses, encourage you to walk barefoot on its dunes and swim in its crystal lagoons.

Jericoacoara
Fondly referred to as ‘Jeri’, prepare to be charmed by its tranquil isolation, charming pousadas, restaurants, nightlife, beautiful coastal scenery and a variety of activities to partake in; like windsurfing, kitesurfing and surfing to name a few.

Jericoacoara is surrounded by a National Park named after the village to ensure the natural flora and fauna is well protected and preserved. With peak season running from July to January, we recommend you reserve your room ahead to avoid disappointment. Jeri is a lovely place to make new friends and meet up with the locals. The six sandy streets are bordered between the beach and a series of grassy hills and the splendid Pôr do Sol (Sunset) dune.

You can start or end your Rota das Emoções (Route of Emotions) tour with Jericoacoara.

Barra Grande
With a number of eclectic hotels and restaurants to choose from, Barra Grande is an excellent stop-over as you make your way from Jericoacoara to Atins. It’s a favourite with the global kiteboarding community and is a tranquil spot along the Route of Emotions, especially for kitesurfers. Barra Grande shares a few similarities to Atins and its kiting conditions. Low tide is ideal to surf in front of the main beach and at high tide kiters can venture around the lagoon for shelter.

Delta do Parnaíba
Delta do Parnaíba is your half way mark between the Lençóis Maranhenses and Jericoacoara on the Rota das Emoções (Route of Emotions).

You can explore the Delta by boat as you cruise around for 1-2 days, to and from Parnaíba or Tutóia, with an overnight stay at Ilha do Cajú for instance or Ilha dos Poldros. We recommend visiting between March to August, as this is when the rains bless the Delta transforming it to a magical landscape. The Delta is made up of 85 islands, nestled between the States of Piauí and Maranhão and opening into five arms. The combination of mangroves, rivers, desert beaches and dunes are home to a plethora of flora and fauna.

Atins
This hidden gem has recently gained popularity in the eyes of travellers around the world and has seen a growth of development in hotels, hostels and restaurants. However, Atins still preserves its rustic charm, due to its isolated location, sandy tracks and flourishing nature. Set on the fringes of the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, you can trek, ride a horse or take a 4x4 as you explore the natural wonders of the park. Atins is particularly famed for its unique and versatile kite conditions which attract enthusiasts from all corners of the world.

São Luís
Lined with cobbled streets and pastel-coloured colonial mansions, São Luís is an enchanting historical city that is often regarded as the reggae capital of Brazil with a sultry nightlife and a lively beach scene. With many buildings listed on the UNESCO World Heritage list, São Luís is an off-the-beaten-track destination that offers a unique atmosphere for travellers. The vibrant and unique Bumba Meu Boi festivities that occur in the month of June are a popular highlight in all of Northeast Brazil! While you’re here, explore the museums, galleries and craft stores; some of which hold relics and artefacts that highlight the town’s illustrious history dating back to 1612 under French colonial rule.

Alcântara
Alcântara is a charming historic town with well-preserved ruins from the 17th century. Although not a part of the Route of Emotions tour, we recommend spending at least two days exploring and appreciating the breath-taking beauty of this old town. Nature lovers can embark on a bird-watching excursion or discover a secluded beach on the islet in front. There’s much to be experienced here.
